Golden Spiral

(materials: mussels, gloss, glue, blick board)

When some friends and I were at docks along the Connecticut river, in Hanover, we could see objects shining on the river bed in the water. Even though swimming was not on my agenda for the day, I jumped into the water and fished them out. I found that the sparkles we could see were light hitting the inside of empty mussel shells. There were hundreds around the dock. My, extraordinarily patient, friends waited as I spent the next thirty minutes fishing out the mussels. Making my car smell like fish, I brought them home and cleaned them. I then attached the mussels to a board. I decided to arrange them in a replica of the Golden Spiral order, which is a mathematical equation which creates a spiral that can also be found in almost all parts of life in the universe (the smaller image has examples of the Golden Spiral).
